National Education Policy 2020 effect on Government Jobs – New National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is out and has been cleared by the Union Cabinet. Earlier National Education Policy was framed in 1986 and modified in 1992.
This Policy proposes the
revision and revamping of all aspects of the education structure, including its regulation and
governance, to create a new system that is aligned with the aspirational goals of the 21st century
Changes by National Education Policy 2020
Among many changes proposed, drastic change is the new NEP pitches for a “5+3+3+4” design corresponding to the age groups 3-8 years (foundational stage), 8-11 (preparatory), 11-14 (middle), and 14-18 (secondary).
Now let us see what are some of the changes that will make some effect on government job recruitment.
- The education system will be 5+3+3+4.
- Phasing out of all institutions offering single streams and that all universities and colleges must aim to become multidisciplinary by 2040.
- Four years of multi-disciplinary Bachelor’s programme with an exit plan.
- Under the four-year graduation programme proposed in the new NEP, students can exit after one year with a certificate, after two years with a diploma, and after three years with a bachelor’s degree.
- The 4-year multidisciplinary Bachelor’s programme, however, shall
be the preferred option.
- Students will be able to enter a research degree programme directly depending on how well he or she has performed, however, the Master’s degree programme will continue as currently running.
- Different designs for Post Graduation program by the educational institutions
- Foreign universities from among the top 100 in the world will be able to set up campuses in India.
NEP 2020 Effect on Government Jobs Recruitment
#1. Teacher Recruitment
👉 To ensure that outstanding students enter the teaching profession – especially from rural areas – a
large number of merit-based scholarships shall be instituted across the country for studying quality 4-
year integrated B.Ed. programmes.
that also includes preferential employment in their local areas upon successful completion of their
B.Ed. programmes. Such scholarships will provide local job opportunities to local students, especially
female students so that these students serve as local-area role models and as highly qualified teachers
who speak the local language.
Incentives will be provided for teachers to take up teaching jobs in
rural areas, especially in areas that are currently facing an acute shortage of quality teachers.

The harmful practice of excessive teacher transfers will be halted so that students have
continuity in their role models and educational environments. Transfers will be conducted through an online computerised system that ensures transparency.
Teacher Eligibility Tests (TETs) will be strengthened to inculcate better test material, both in
terms of content and pedagogy. The TETs will also be extended to cover teachers across all stages
(Foundational, Preparatory, Middle and Secondary) of school education.

A robust merit-based structure of tenure,
promotion and salary structure will be developed, with multiple levels within each teacher stage, that

#2. Minimum Qualification will change
Since, in new NEP 2020, there will be a drastic change in the current school education and will be converted to a 5+3+3+4 pattern whereas 10th/High School pass and 12th pass/ Intermediate will be there but preference will be changed. 11th class qualification will become the most important qualification.
Also, The National Skills Qualifications Framework will be detailed further for each discipline vocation, and profession. Further, Indian standards will be aligned with the International Standard Classification of Occupations maintained by the International Labour Organization.
This Framework will provide the basis for Recognition of Prior Learning. Through this, dropouts from the formal system will be reintegrated by aligning their practical experience with the relevant level of the Framework. The credit-based Framework will also facilitate mobility across ‘general’ and vocational education.
In our opinion, all these things will lead to a change in the basic minim qualification for a large set of government vacancies and will change the recruitment pattern.
#3. Promotion of Indian Languages
👉 In Higher Education Institutes and programmes in higher education, will use the mother tongue/local
language as a medium of instruction, and/or offer programmes bilingually, in order to increase access and also to promote the strength, usage, and vibrancy of all Indian languages
High-quality programmes and degrees in Translation and Interpretation, Art and Museum
Administration, Archaeology, Artefact Conservation, Graphic Design, and Web Design within the higher education system will also be created.

qualified individuals to curate and run museums and heritage or tourist sites, thereby also vastly
strengthening the tourism industry.
Thus this will create large government jobs based on the basic qualifications in Indian languages. Hitherto, the emphasis is on English language but NEP 2020 will shift focus to the selection of the suitable person well versed in Hindi/Indian languages in government jobs especially in central government.
The recruitment examination patter may also be changed with the implementation of this aspect.
#4. Possible change in Age
👉 With changes in the education system through NEP 2020 5+3+3+4 formula, the age of the candidates for various government jobs will changes. For example, in government recruitment, let’s say Government Bank vacancy recruitment (Office Assistant (Clerical)/ Probationary Officer), the minimum educational qualification is Graduation from a recognised university.
Now, for BA/B.Com./BBA/BCA and for so many other Degree courses the duration of the course will be 4 years but the candidates’ age will not be affected because the degree programme will now start after 11th class only.
But for the candidates already having 4-year degree courses (B.Tech./B.E. and so many other qualifications) will spend one year less as their course continue to be 4 years in new NEP 2020 and the candidates may appear for Government Bank recruitment exams one year earlier.
There may be so many other cases where possibly some change in the age of candidates will be affected.
May recruitment exams like National Defence Academy (NDA), Army/Navy 10+2 Technical Entry etc. where a candidates is selected after 12th class and trained for 4 years, become technically qualified and then inducted will see the change and candidates will one year younger join.
There may be a large number of changes that will affect the government job vacancy recruitment process in India once the new NEP 2020 fully implemented by the target date of 2040. Age, qualification, exam patern, skill requirement etc. all will be affected.
